Tips for a Healthy Fall

As the seasons change and the weather gets colder, the fall may bring issues such as colds, flu, stomach viruses and allergies. Here are five tips to having a healthy fall:

  1. Wash your hands constantly. Consistently washing your hands can help you get rid of the germs that cause illness. Whether you get off the train, come home from school or use the restroom, washing your hands properly can keep you healthy.

  2. Get enough vitamin D. As the days get shorter, it’s important to get outside at least 15 minutes a day. Vitamin D helps your body absorb essential nutrients, which helps you avoid the feeling of being tired or fatigued and can protect you from illnesses or infections.

  3. Stay active. Take advantage of the Indian summer temperatures for as long as they last and get outside for a brisk walk or a bike ride.

  4. Schedule your annual wellness exam. If you haven’t been to the doctor for your annual wellness visit, schedule a visit with your provider before the end of the year.

  5. Get a flu shot. The flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor’s visits and missed days of work and school each year. The flu shot is safe for everyone six months of age or older. It is especially important for people at high risk for flu complications, such as children, pregnant women, and seniors, to be protected from the infection.
